- Four Turner Prize nominees — Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, Marguerite Humeau and Tanoa Sasraku — will exhibit at MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) from 26 September, in a hosting MIMA director Dr Laura Sillars called a "prestigious opportunity".
- MIMA director Dr Laura Sillars said of the exhibition: "While it's here, at a certain level, we are the centre of the creative universe."
- Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke framed the show as an "incredible opportunity" for residents to see cutting-edge art at home, adding he hopes it "inspires our young people to dream about what's possible".
- The exhibition spans mixed media, sculpture and spoken word, with the winner to be announced on 10 December.
- The Turner Prize, established in 1984 and named after English Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner, carries a £25,000 top prize, with the other three shortlisted artists each receiving £10,000.
Why it matters: The Turner Prize — one of the UK's most prestigious visual arts awards — is being hosted in a regional city rather than a traditional capital, putting Middlesbrough's MIMA on the national arts stage and giving local residents direct access to four shortlisted British artists ahead of the 10 December winner reveal.
