- Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences selected 16 winners from 2,972 entries submitted by 894 colleges and universities worldwide for the 53rd Student Academy Awards.
- The ceremony will be held at TIFF Lightbox at Reitman Square, inside the Toronto International Film Festival, on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 6pm ET — marking the first time the awards align with TIFF.
- Gold, silver and bronze placements will be announced across four categories: Alternative/Experimental, Animation, Documentary and Narrative, with recipients spanning schools in the U.S., France, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, U.K. and Canada.
- First-time honors go to students from Concordia University, Duke University, ESMA, ESCAC, St. Joost School of Art and Design, and Warsaw Film School.
- Winners will participate in a weekend of education programming, networking opportunities and exclusive access to Academy members beyond the awards themselves.
- All winning films become eligible to compete in the 99th Oscars' Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film or Documentary Short Film categories, joining a pipeline that has produced 70 past nominations and 15 wins among former Student Academy Award recipients.
- The program, established in 1972, counts Patricia Cardoso, Pete Docter, Spike Lee, Patricia Riggen and Robert Zemeckis among its alumni.
