- BYD opened orders in the UK on Wednesday for the Shark PHEV pickup at £47,290 (~$63,000) including VAT, with customer deliveries set to begin by the end of the year.
- The Shark offers 55.9 miles of pure-electric range from its 32.2 kWh Blade Battery — more than double the Ford Ranger PHEV's 27 miles — and can travel 419 miles on a full tank and charge.
- BYD's Super Hybrid DMO powertrain pairs a 1.5-liter engine with two electric motors producing a combined 430 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, delivering 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds.
- The pickup supports 55 kW DC fast charging (30% to 80% in about 21 minutes), tows over 5,550 lbs (2,500 kg), and features Vehicle-to-Load output of up to 6.6 kW.
- The Shark is already on sale in Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Chile, and Peru, and is slightly larger than the Ford Ranger at 5,457 mm long with a 3,260 mm wheelbase.
- BYD executive VP Stella Li said the plug-in hybrid pickup market is "expanding rapidly" and claimed the Shark "brings performance far in advance of what can be achieved by traditional diesel pickups."
- The interior features a 10.25-inch driver display, a 15.6-inch center touchscreen (largest in its class) with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a head-up display.
Why it matters: BYD is pricing the Shark at roughly the same bracket as established rivals while delivering double the EV range of the Ford Ranger PHEV, giving European fleet and lifestyle buyers a plug-in option that doesn't compromise on daily electric driving. With deliveries starting by year-end, BYD becomes one of the first automakers to bring a PHEV pickup to UK showrooms at scale.
