- The 2027 free agent class features Giannis Antetokounmpo (player option), Stephen Curry, Nikola Jokic (player option), Kawhi Leonard, LeBron James (player option), Kevin Durant (player option), Karl-Anthony Towns (player option), Anthony Davis (player option), and Kyrie Irving (player option); per ESPN, Antetokounmpo, Curry, Jokic, Butler, Leonard, Davis, Towns, and Ingram are eligible to sign extensions this season and bypass free agency.
- Nikola Jokic told reporters in Serbian after a FIBA World Cup qualifying game, "My idea and desire is to stay in Denver. I'll probably sign next year," and could ink a 5-year, $359.5M contract next summer β projected as the largest in NBA history β pushing his career on-court earnings to $724M.
- Up to nine teams β including Atlanta (up to $50M), Brooklyn, Chicago, Golden State, the Clippers, Memphis, Milwaukee, New Orleans, and Sacramento β could enter the 2027 offseason with cap room, up from three or fewer this summer.
- Golden State could have between $50M and $100M in 2027 cap space if Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green are renounced or re-signed at lower salaries, marking the Warriors' first cap flexibility since adding Kevin Durant in 2016.
- Extension eligibility opens for Antetokounmpo on Jan. 6 (3- or 4-year max), Davis on Aug. 6 (up to 4-year, $275M with Washington), and Curry on Aug. 29 (up to 2-year, $137M); Leonard and the Raptors are also likely to engage in extension talks once the NBA's investigation into alleged Clippers salary cap circumvention concludes.
- The slow extension market: Just four veteran extensions β Donovan Mitchell, Neemias Queta, Jordan Walsh, and Andrew Wiggins β and one rookie extension (Victor Wembanyama) have been signed this offseason, well below the 23-per-season average under the current CBA since 2023.
- Tyrese Maxey and Anthony Edwards are identified as supermax candidates to watch; Maxey was one year shy of eligibility this offseason after his 2026 All-NBA selection.
Why it matters: Up to nine teams could enter 2027 with cap space β Golden State for the first time since 2016's Durant signing. But star players hold player options, in-season extensions could shrink the field, and Jokic's projected $359.5M supermax would be the largest contract in NBA history, pushing his career earnings to $724M.
