- Tokyo International Film Festival unveiled its complete lineup for its 39th edition, headlined by a 15-film main competition including work by Indonesian director Garin Nugroho, Japanese filmmaker Mishima Yukiko and Hong Kong-based Qiu Jiongjiong.
- Seven competition titles receive world premieres, including Taiwan-Japan co-production "The Canary's Lullaby" (Ikeda Akira), Qiu Jiongjiong's multinational "Fuxi: Four Tales of Feasting," and Mishima Yukiko's "Two Cigarettes, Three Nights."
- The Gala selection features Zeze Takahisa's "Sukiyaki" as the opening film, Yeon Sang-ho's South Korean "Colony" as the closing film (Japanese premiere), and Yamazaki Takashi's "Godzilla Minus Zero" as the centerpiece, alongside titles from Tony Gilroy, Cristian Mungiu and Martin McDonagh.
- The Asian Future section presents 10 titles with eight world premieres, including Iran's Navid Mohammadzadeh, Indonesia's Ariani Darmawan, and Kim Hyun-min's South Korean "On the Heights."
- The World Focus section spotlights films by Valeska Grisebach, Lav Diaz and Edwin, plus a Taiwan Cinema Renaissance 2026 strand, an Australia Spotlight and a tribute to German filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger.
- The Classics section screens 4K remasters of Naruse Mikio's "When a Woman Ascends the Stairs" and "Scattered Clouds," alongside a Mizoguchi Kenji retrospective and a Nikkatsu Roman Porno 55th-anniversary program.
- Programming director Ichiyama Shozo leads the overall selection with senior programmer Ishizaka Kenji overseeing the Asian Future section; the festival runs Oct. 26–Nov. 4 in Tokyo.
Why it matters: TIFF's 39th edition doubles down on Asian world premieres — 15 of its 23 programmed competition/Asian Future films get world or international premieres, giving regional filmmakers from Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, Iran and Bangladesh a high-profile launchpad before the awards calendar intensifies. The Godzilla centerpiece and McDonagh, Mungiu and Gilroy Gala titles signal TIFF's continued bid for global auteur prestige alongside its regional showcase mandate.
