- FDA proposed policies in the president's budget aimed at encouraging domestic drug development and manufacturing, specifically to counter China's dominance in early-stage clinical development, STAT reports.
- FDA Commissioner Marty Makary said the agency needs "giant, big ideas" to compete with China, proposing to make it easier to run early-stage clinical trials in the U.S. and to favor U.S.-based generics manufacturers.
- One legislative proposal in the FDA's budget justification would let domestic generic drug manufacturers challenge brand-name patents a full month before foreign companies can — a first-mover advantage in an intensely competitive process.
- AbbVie will sell Humira on TrumpRx at an 86% discount, following its January deal with the Trump administration to cut prices on certain medicines; Humira treats rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis.
- Genentech will also begin selling its medicines on TrumpRx, the second major drugmaker to officially join the site in this round.
- TrumpRx now lists more than 61 drugs at lower prices, up from about 40 when the site launched in February; discounts are restricted to uninsured patients or those paying full list price out of pocket.
Why it matters: The FDA's proposed 30-day patent-challenge head start for U.S. generics would hand domestic manufacturers a structural edge over foreign competitors — a real lever, not just rhetoric, in the brand-vs-generics fight. TrumpRx's jump from ~40 to 61+ drugs in months shows manufacturers increasingly willing to slash list prices for political alignment and direct-to-consumer reach.
