Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork memory

- Anthropic announced on Tuesday it is merging the memory system powering Claude chat and Claude Cowork, so Claude retains information learned in one surface when users move to the other.
- Users can now read, edit, or delete any topic Claude has stored across both experiences, replacing the previous black-box recall.
- Instead of waiting to summarize a conversation at its end, Claude adds topics to memory continuously as the chat unfolds, letting Cowork pick up context even mid-conversation.
- By default, Claude will not store personal or sensitive information — health data, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, politics, and gender identity — though users can opt in via a 'include sensitive topics in memory' toggle.
- Government-issued IDs, Social Security numbers, criminal history, and immigration status are permanently excluded from memory storage under Anthropic's acceptable use policy, with the app notifying users whenever a sensitive topic is saved.
- Memory is enabled by default on Free, Pro, and Max plans across web, desktop, and mobile, with iOS and Android users required to update to the latest app version.
- Anthropic frames the change as collapsing two products into 'one continuous assistant' — for example, a Cowork draft of a manager update or conference agenda will already know the headcount, city, and speakers from prior chats.
Why it matters: The merge eliminates the most cited friction point with Claude agents — re-explaining project context every time a user moves from chatting to executing — and makes Cowork feel like an extension of the same assistant rather than a separate tool with amnesia. Anthropic's hard exclusions (SSNs, criminal history, immigration status) and opt-in toggle for sensitive categories set a transparency floor that competing assistants will be implicitly measured against as persistent memory becomes table stakes.
