- Anthropic merged the memory systems of Claude chat and Claude Cowork on Tuesday, eliminating the need to re-brief the assistant on information it already learned in another surface.
- Claude now lets users read, edit, or delete any information it has retained in memory, and adds new topics to memory continuously during chat rather than summarizing only when a conversation ends.
- Anthropic said Claude will not store sensitive categories — health data, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, politics, gender identity — by default, though users can opt in via a 'include sensitive topics in memory' toggle and will be notified each time such a topic is saved.
- Claude will never save government-issued IDs, Social Security numbers, criminal history, immigration status, or anything that violates its acceptable use policy, regardless of user settings.
- The memory feature is enabled by default on Free, Pro, and Max plans across web, desktop, and mobile; iOS and Android users must update to the latest app version to access it.
Why it matters: Users who research or brainstorm in Claude chat and then hand off execution to Cowork — drafting a manager update or building a conference agenda — no longer pay the friction tax of re-entering context like headcount, speakers, or city. By making memory continuous across surfaces, Anthropic turns Claude from two stitched-together products into one assistant, a concrete UX win for agent-heavy workflows on Free through Max plans.
