- Kansas City Chiefs lost 20-3 to the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, ending a perfect start to the 2026 season.
- Patrick Mahomes fumbled in the third quarter, chased the loose ball, was tripped, dived into a pile and came out with the football; Seattle kicked a field goal before Kansas City regained possession, and Neil Reynolds drew a parallel with Mahomes' Super Bowl 50 fumble, when Seattle led 13-0 and he recovered the ball beneath a pile.
- Neil Reynolds said he has watched Mahomes compete at Chiefs indoor training camps with only a handful of media present when bad weather forced them inside, and that he would bet the quarterback is the same way in off-field contests such as races or games of cards.
- Jeff Reinebold likened Mahomes' mindset to Kobe Bryant's 'Mamba Mentality' and Michael Jordan's habit of betting his luggage came off the carousel first, arguing the quarterback's competitive heart and football intelligence match his arm talent in fuelling his rise; he also recalled a playoff game Mahomes played while he 'could barely walk' and won.
- Patrick Mahomes' résumé includes three Super Bowl victories, five Super Bowl appearances and seven straight AFC Championship Game outings from 2018-2024; he is one of just five quarterbacks to win three or more Super Bowls as a starter, a two-time MVP and a three-time Super Bowl MVP.
- NFL records held by Mahomes include 5,608 total passing yards in a single season by a quarterback and 285.2 career passing yards per game.
- Kenneth Walker III arrived as Kansas City's marquee addition and is credited with helping the Chiefs rediscover their offensive spark this year, after the club missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and Mahomes underwent knee surgery last year.
Why it matters: The practical stake is Kansas City's offense: Reinebold argues a quarterback who dives after his own fumble sets the standard for linemen and receivers, and after a first playoff absence since 2014 the Chiefs again lean on Mahomes, recovered from knee surgery, with Walker III added; Denver is next.
