Moonshot, Alibaba Unveil AI Models Rivaling US Labs

- Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K3 on Friday, claiming its own testing ranks it above nearly every US system, trailing only OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5
- Alibaba previewed Qwen3.8 over the weekend, calling it "one of the most powerful model[s] available today" and second only to Anthropic's Fable 5
- Both companies are releasing their frontier models as open-source systems — Moonshot's Kimi K3 has 2.8 trillion parameters (called the world's largest open-source AI) while Alibaba's Qwen3.8 has 2.4 trillion parameters, and neither OpenAI nor Anthropic discloses parameter counts
- Moonshot will release full model weights on July 27th, and Alibaba says Qwen3.8 is "going open-weight soon," with independent testing still pending
- The releases echo DeepSeek's low-cost model debut last year that rivaled leading US systems and rattled the industry
- Washington has used export controls to restrict China's chip access and forced Anthropic to pull its most capable system from the market — yet Chinese rivals are reaching the frontier with fewer resources
Why it matters: Two open-weight Chinese models claiming near-parity with OpenAI and Anthropic undercut the assumption that massive US spending on chips, data centers, and training buys a durable AI lead — and they do so while Washington simultaneously restricts chip exports and pulls Anthropic's top system from market.
