Spotify to add label for AI-generated artists and remove them from recommendations

- Spotify will roll out an "AI Persona badge" on artist profiles from mid-September, flagging accounts where the "artist's identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person."
- AI-labeled artists will be removed from users' personalized recommendations unless they already follow them, with the badge appearing on profile banners, about sections, search results, and tracks within playlists.
- Spotify deliberately distinguishes the badge from its existing AI Credits feature — the badge covers the artist's public identity, not whether AI tools were used in production, a separate disclosure system the company says receives "tens of thousands of submissions... daily."
- Musician Alex Winn, guitarist in North East band Swindled, called the change "a really good thing," arguing it "separates the people who have created music properly from the people just using AI" and helps bands who are "finding it hard to compete."
- Spotify says it will proactively review accounts that appear to meet AI criteria, and flagged artists will be able to self-disclose or appeal; the badge will note whether the label came from the artist or from Spotify's own review.
- BBC Newsbeat previously spoke to a frustrated listener who, after AI tracks kept surfacing in his playlists, built his own tool to automatically label and block them.
Why it matters: By demoting AI-generated artists from personalized recommendations, Spotify is tilting its core discovery algorithm toward human musicians — a material advantage at a time when the streamer separately logs tens of thousands of daily AI Credits disclosures showing AI tools are already deeply woven into human production.
