- Energy Dome and Salt River Project announced a 20-year tolling agreement to build a 19-MW, 10-hour CO2 battery system co-located at SRP's Coronado Generating Station in St. Johns, Arizona, expected to come online in 2029.
- The system will store enough energy to power approximately 4,275 homes for 10 hours, using Energy Dome's proprietary thermomechanical process that compresses CO2 for storage and expands it through a turbine to generate electricity.
- Google, which made a 'strategic investment' in Milan-based Energy Dome last year, will fund a portion of the project through a cost-sharing agreement with SRP and said the technology 'has the potential to commercialize much faster than some of the other advanced clean energy technologies in our portfolio.'
- The battery will sit at Coronado Generating Station, which is converting from coal to natural gas — natural gas conversion due by 2029, with all coal generation ceasing by 2032.
- SRP aims to at least double its generating resources by 2035 to meet Phoenix-area energy demand and selected the project through a request for proposals issued in 2024.
- Energy Dome will own and operate the facility while SRP dispatches its output onto the grid, with the deployment described as part of a broader Google–SRP collaboration on non-lithium-ion long-duration energy storage.
Why it matters: SRP gets a real-world test of CO2 battery technology at a coal-to-gas conversion site as it races to double generating capacity by 2035 for Phoenix-area demand. Google locks in a near-term clean energy tool it explicitly plans to pair with data center demand response, betting that CO2 storage commercializes faster than other advanced technologies in its portfolio.
