- Sycamore raised a $65M seed round announced Monday, led by Coatue and Lightspeed, with a high-profile angel list including former OpenAI chief scientist Bob McGrew, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, and Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi.
- Founder Sri Viswanath, a former Coatue investor who left full-time VC in the fall to become CEO, brings 20+ years in enterprise platforms including stints at Sun Microsystems, VMware, Groupon, and as CTO of Atlassian, where he scaled engineering to 7,000+.
- Viswanath pitches Sycamore as building a full agentic orchestration layer "from the problem itself" — covering agents, back-end systems, front ends, and data integrations — rather than "layering agents on top of existing workflows."
- Smaller rivals are also raising aggressively: OpenAI-backed Isara pulled in $94M per the WSJ, Airia raised $100M in September, and Port raised $100M in December, all targeting the same enterprise agent platform layer.
- OpenAI's Frontier, Anthropic's Cowork, Microsoft Azure's Foundry, and AWS's Bedrock AgentCore are all building their own enterprise agent platforms — the same orchestration layer Sycamore is going after.
- Other participating VCs include Abstract Ventures, Dell Technologies Capital, 8VC, Fellows Fund, and E14 Fund, with angels Okta co-founder Frederic Kerrest, Rubrik co-founder Soham Mazumdar, and Zapier's Mike Knoop.
Why it matters: Sycamore is entering a market where the four largest AI players — OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and AWS — are all building their own enterprise agent platforms, alongside well-funded startups like Isara ($94M), Airia ($100M), and Port ($100M). The $65M seed and pedigree angels buy Viswanath credibility and runway, but the company has to win enterprise deals against incumbents who already own distribution, data, and model access.
