- Anthropic has started listing rupee-denominated pricing for Claude in India — its second-largest market, accounting for 5.8% of global Claude usage, behind only the United States.
- Claude Pro is priced at ₹2,000/month (~$21) billed annually in India versus $17 in the U.S., with Claude Max starting at ₹11,999 (~$125) and Team plans at ₹2,399 per seat per month — all prices include local taxes.
- OpenAI rolled out rupee pricing for ChatGPT with Unified Payments Interface support in August, a payment method Anthropic has not yet enabled for Claude users in India, who must pay via card or through Apple and Google app store billing.
- Irina Ghose, the former Microsoft India managing director appointed by Anthropic in January, leads the company's India business from a Bengaluru office that opened in February after being announced in October.
- Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services have partnered with Anthropic in recent months as the Claude maker looks to scale enterprise AI deployments across India's large developer and technology workforce.
- The India expansion faced a setback in June when Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-U.S. entities, prompting some Indian developers to consider alternatives; Fable 5 access has since been restored but Mythos 5 remains limited.
Why it matters: Anthropic's India pricing runs roughly 24% above U.S. rates for the Pro tier (~$21 vs. $17), and the absence of UPI — which OpenAI enabled for ChatGPT in August — leaves checkout friction in a price-sensitive market where converting usage into paid subscriptions is already flagged as a challenge. That payment gap could undercut Anthropic's enterprise push through its Infosys and TCS partnerships and its bid to lock in India's developer base.
