- American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez sold out its Friday opening at Film Forum in NYC, with subject Luis Valdez, director David Alvarado, and Lou Diamond Phillips attending — described as rare for any specialty film to debut alongside the "Odyssey juggernaut"
- The documentary swept Sundance, winning both the Festival Favorite Award and the Audience Award for U.S. documentary, plus the Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize
- Insignia Films with booking support from mTuckman Media will expand the film to a dozen LA theaters next week including Laemmle, AMC, Maya Cinemas, Alamo Drafthouse, and Vidiots, with United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta appearing at openings
- On July 31, the film opens at San Francisco's sold-out Roxie Theater, the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael, Rialto Elmwood Theater in Berkeley, Alamo Mountain View, and Valley Fair in South Bay/San Jose
- The rollout is booked through September for runs in more than 20 cities including Dallas, Austin, Houston, Chicago, and Tucson
- Edward James Olmos narrates in character as El Pachuco from "Zoot Suit," with appearances by Valdez, Lou Diamond Phillips, Cheech Marin, Linda Ronstadt, Taylor Hackford, and Rose Portillo
- Luis Valdez, born in Delano, CA in 1940, founded El Teatro Campesino as the artistic arm of the United Farm Workers and became the first Chicano director on Broadway with "Zoot Suit" in 1979; his "Zoot Suit" and "La Bamba" (1987) are both preserved in the National Film Registry
Why it matters: A Sundance double-winner is making an unusual specialty debut during The Odyssey's blockbuster frame, and the sold-out Film Forum opening plus bookings at 20-plus cities through September signal exhibitors see real demand. With Valdez's "Zoot Suit" and "La Bamba" already in the National Film Registry, the rollout gives Chicano cinema history a genuine 20-plus city commercial platform at a moment when multiplexes are otherwise dominated by tentpole spectacle.
