- Vladimir Putin arrived in Delhi on Friday for the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam (Sept 12-13), marking his first in-person BRICS participation outside Russia since the February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
- PM Narendra Modi will hold afternoon bilateral talks with Putin on Friday covering the Ukraine-Russia conflict, energy, defence, technology, pharmaceuticals and people-to-people exchanges.
- Modi also has bilaterals lined up with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in the evening, alongside meetings with China's Xi Jinping and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan over the summit period.
- India's Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described India-Russia ties as a "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" while welcoming Putin at the airport.
- Delhi authorities closed all government and private schools on Sept 11 and imposed three-day traffic restrictions, deploying thousands of security personnel for the summit.
Why it matters: Putin's first BRICS trip outside Russia since the February 2022 invasion lands in Delhi just as Modi also hosts Iran's Pezeshkian, China's Xi, and the Abu Dhabi crown prince — concentrating leaders Western capitals have distanced themselves from into a single weekend of bilateral meetings.
