- Academy Museum will present “Roberto Rossellini Prefers Real Life” with Cinecittà and the Italian Ministry of Culture on November 4-5, with the series running through November 30; its title draws from François Truffaut’s 1963 essay recognizing Rossellini as the father of the French New Wave.
- Film Forum will host the 25-film “Rossellini 120” in New York from November 20 through December 10.
- Isabella Rossellini will present the films and attend the Academy Museum on November 4-5 and the Film Forum opening night; Rossellini’s family, Cinecittà CEO Manuela Cacciamani and Academy Museum president Amy Homma will also attend.
- Rome, Open City, Paisan and Germany, Year Zero will be joined by Guy Maddin’s My Dad Is 100 Years Old, featuring Isabella Rossellini, plus documentaries Viva Ingrid! and Rossellini Through His Own Eyes in the Academy Museum program.
- Cinecittà has held rights to 10 of Rossellini’s most representative films for 30 years, periodically restoring them in its own labs while preserving valuable 35mm prints that will be made available exceptionally for the event.
- Fear will receive the world premiere of Cinecittà’s new 4K restoration at the Academy Museum; the 1954 film was Rossellini’s last with Ingrid Bergman.
- Journey to Italy will reach the United States in its restored form after its Venice Classics premiere.
Why it matters: Film audiences gain access to a new 4K restoration of Fear and a restored Journey to Italy, while Film Forum’s 25-film New York series opens November 20 and runs through December 10. For institutions, Cinecittà’s 30-year hold on rights to 10 Rossellini films makes the 120th-birthday tribute concrete: preservation, exhibition and a world premiere arrive in one program.
