- UCLA, ranked seventh and favored by 22½ points, improved to 8-0 for the first time since 2005 by routing Nevada 27-0; it was the Bruins’ first shutout at the Rose Bowl since beating Oregon 16-0 on Nov. 24, 2007.
- Ty Dieffenbach completed 16 of 30 passes for 178 yards, ran for a 4-yard touchdown before halftime and threw a 12-yard touchdown to Wayne Knight, whose 14th score of the season put UCLA ahead 24-0.
- Scooter Jackson intercepted Luke Duncan on Nevada’s first play and set up Mateen Bhaghani’s 26-yard field goal; Anthony Woods picked off a tipped ball at the UCLA 16, and Derrick Barksdale came up with UCLA’s third pick of the quarter, leading to his 26-yard touchdown run for a 10-0 lead.
- Ty Lee intercepted Nevada in the final seconds for UCLA’s fourth pick, bringing its season total to 16 after just one at the same point last year, when the Bruins won only three games.
- Luke Duncan, who transferred from UCLA after coach Bob Chesney was hired last December, finished 1-for-8 for 36 yards against his former team; AJ Bianco replaced him and went 6-for-13 for 71 yards, with true freshman Reeve Slone closing.
- Mateen Bhaghani capped an eight-play, 28-yard drive with a 38-yard field goal after reaching fourth-and-2, making UCLA’s final margin 27-0.
Why it matters: UCLA moved to its first 8-0 start since 2005 while its interception total stood at 16, compared with one at the same point last year and only three wins for the previous season. Nevada fell to 3-5, and former UCLA quarterback Luke Duncan managed 36 yards on 1-for-8 passing against his old team.
