Norris wins Hungarian GP after Piastri-Sainz collision

- Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix, his first victory of 2026, after inheriting the lead when teammate Oscar Piastri's front-right tyre collided with the rear-left of Carlos Sainz's Williams during a blue-flag dispute between Sainz and Fernando Alonso, costing Piastri up to two seconds.
- Oscar Piastri suffered a double blow — losing the lead to Norris via the Sainz contact, then seeing his gearbox expire with 14 laps remaining under a Virtual Safety Car — and vented on team radio that Sainz had cost McLaren the win.
- Max Verstappen finished second and Kimi Antonelli third, allowing the Italian teenager to extend his championship advantage over Lewis Hamilton from 45 to 50 points.
- Lewis Hamilton finished fourth on track but was demoted to fifth behind Charles Leclerc via a five-second penalty for pit-lane speeding, his fourth stewards' sanction in three rounds, after Ferrari pitted him one more time than Verstappen and Antonelli.
- George Russell recovered from a Mercedes anti-stall failure at the lights-out that left him 19th at the end of lap one to finish seventh, leaving him 59 points off the championship pace.
- Norris passed Antonelli on lap 46 after a strategically timed third pit stop under the VSC and cantered to the flag, with the season resuming at the Dutch Grand Prix on Aug. 23 — the first of 12 scheduled rounds remaining.
Why it matters: Norris reignites his title defence while Antonelli's 50-point cushion over Hamilton heading into the summer break makes an eighth championship for Hamilton a steep uphill task, with 12 rounds and Verstappen still in the mix as a wild card.
