- Coinbase posted a Q2 GAAP net loss of $359 million, far wider than the roughly $122 million loss analysts had expected
- Net revenue of approximately $1.2 billion was broadly in line with consensus but down 19% year-over-year
- Transaction revenue came in at $599 million, below the $636 million expected, and subscription and services revenue landed at $555 million versus a $590 million consensus
- Coinbase captured an all-time-high 10.3% share of global crypto trading volume, up from 9.1% in Q1, even as industry-wide activity weakened
- The exchange blamed softer results on a 25% quarter-over-quarter drop in total crypto spot trading volume, lower volatility, and weaker crypto prices
- Coinbase is positioning as an "Everything Exchange," expanding beyond spot trading into derivatives, prediction markets, tokenized assets, and payments
- Shares fell more than 5% in after-hours trading following the report
Why it matters: Shares dropped 5%+ after hours as investors fixated on the loss miss, yet the 10.3% global market-share high shows Coinbase is winning relative share even as the crypto trading pie itself shrank 25% quarter-over-quarter. The "Everything Exchange" push into derivatives and tokenized finance is Coinbase's stated hedge against the spot-trading volatility that hit revenue this quarter.
