- Focus Features dated Hot Spot, an AI-themed sci-fi thriller reuniting the studio with The Silent Twins director Agnieszka Smoczyńska, for a North American theatrical release on August 21.
- Hot Spot is set in a near-future society ruled by sentient A.I., where a private eye investigating a murder uncovers a rebel group capable of undermining the digital overlord.
- The Polish–Greek co-production was written by Robert Bolesto, with Madants and Neda Film producing on the Polish and Greek sides respectively, and Bogna Szewczyk-Skupień and Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska producing for Madants alongside Gregory Jankilevitsch.
- The cast is led by Andrzej Konopka, Noomi Rapace, and Reika Kirishima.
- Hot Spot will open against Black Bear's crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, the comedy Spa Weekend, Screen Gems' Insidious: Out of the Further, and Lionsgate's Jason Statham action thriller Mutiny.
- Focus Features' remaining 2026 slate includes Curry Barker's Obsession (May 15), Anthony Maras' D-Day thriller Pressure (May 29), Hayley Kiyoko's Girls Like Girls (June 19), Paul Greengrass' The Uprising (Sept 11) starring Andrew Garfield, a new Sense and Sensibility (Oct 16) starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Robert Eggers' Werwulf (Dec 25).
Why it matters: Focus Features is planting a mid-budget, internationally-produced sci-fi film on a competitive late-August weekend against a Statham action vehicle and a new Insidious entry, betting that a festival-friendly AI premise from a rising Polish director can break out where bigger franchise titles dominate the marketplace.
