'It's like having an amusement park and not opening it' - algae closures take toll

- UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology has recorded 247 algae blooms across Lough Neagh and Northern Ireland's water systems, with 80 confirmed in June and July alone.
- Karl Toner, owner of a coffee cart, glamping site, and paddleboard hire business at Camlough Lake, says visitor numbers fell sharply after the 13 July algae warning, with the lakeside now "completely empty" despite peak summer weather.
- Newry, Mourne and Down District Council erected warning signs at Camlough Lake on 13 July and is conducting regular visual monitoring and toxin testing, with restrictions to remain until safety criteria are met.
- Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council suspended watersports and open-water swimming at Craigavon Lakes on 21 July and said the situation is being monitored daily.
- Joanne Callan, a holistic therapist from Bessbrook, said a community of more than 100 open-water swimmers formed at Camlough Lake since 2018, and closures impact people "physically, emotionally and socially."
- Rachel Turkington of Derrytrasna said her family recently bought a paddleboard but would only use it at Craigavon Lakes once water quality concerns are addressed, noting visible green patches and stagnant areas on a recent walk.
- Scientists estimate approximately four decades' worth of phosphorus is stored in Lough Neagh's sediment, with ongoing inputs from agriculture, wastewater, septic tanks, industry, and household detergents keeping the nutrient topped up.
Why it matters: Tourism-dependent small businesses like Toner's face immediate revenue losses precisely when summer weather should drive peak trade, while the analysis attributes the recurring blooms to structural phosphorus pollution across agriculture and wastewater systems — meaning short-term closures will keep returning unless nutrient sources are addressed at the catchment level.
