- Jannik Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final to claim his second consecutive All England Club title and fifth Grand Slam trophy overall
- Sinner's title came in his first tournament since a second-round French Open meltdown that ended a 30-match winning streak, dropping him within one game of a straight-sets loss to world No. 56 Juan Manuel Cerundolo in late May
- Zverev appeared to hyper-extend his right knee after slipping on the grass at 3-3 in the third set, the pivotal moment that handed Sinner his first break of the match and a 5-3 lead; Sinner helped his opponent up off the court
- Sinner became the first man to win Wimbledon without conceding a service game in both the semifinal and final since Roger Federer did so en route to his first title in 2003, saving both break points he faced
- Zverev, who had lost 14 consecutive sets to Sinner entering the match, will nonetheless leapfrog injured Carlos Alcaraz into the No. 2 ranking on Monday despite the defeat
- Prince William joined Kate and two of their children in the Royal Box alongside Dustin Hoffman, Nicole Kidman and Ben Stiller for the star-studded final
Why it matters: Sinner's fifth major at age 23, combined with Alcaraz missing both the French Open and Wimbledon due to a wrist injury, hardens Sinner's grip on the No. 1 ranking and signals a one-man era atop men's tennis until Alcaraz returns healthy.
