- Most sleeping bag temperature ratings assume the user is on an R-value-5 pad plus a base layer, so the guide warns a 30°F quilt paired with an R4 pad will leave a camper cold in freezing temps.
- Women should add roughly 1 R-value to match a given pad's insulation for men, due to lower body mass, and cold sleepers in general should up the rating as well.
