Pathirage tops qualifying ahead of Chopra-Nadeem javelin final

- Rumesh Pathirage topped Thursday's qualifying round with a lone 82.84m throw, the best in the 12-man field where no athlete breached the 84m automatic qualification mark due to cold, windy conditions in Edinburgh.
- Neeraj Chopra qualified fifth with 79.61m and Arshad Nadeem seventh with 78.63m, both acknowledging the difficult weather; India is the only country with three finalists (Chopra, Rohit Yadav, Yashvir Singh).
- Anderson Peters of Grenada (81.29m) and South Africa's Douw Smit (80.84m) joined Pathirage in qualifying on a single throw, while reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago scraped into the final 11th with 78.26m.

- Chopra leads the career head-to-head against Nadeem 9-1 per World Athletics standings and owns Commonwealth gold (2018), Olympic gold (Tokyo 2020) and world championship gold (2023); Nadeem is the defending Commonwealth and Olympic champion and holds the Olympic record at 92.97m.
- Chopra praised Pathirage for adding Sri Lanka to South Asian javelin supremacy, calling the 12-man field tough; the final is scheduled for Friday, July 31, at 8:15pm local time (19:15 GMT) at Scotstoun Stadium.
