Croatia tenders 56 MW solar project with 200 MWh storage

- Hrvatska Elektroprivreda (HEP) launched an open two-stage tender for a developer to build a 56 MW solar plant alongside up to 200 MWh of battery energy storage in Sukošan municipality, Zadar county, with pre-qualification proposals due May 12.
- The project is backed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which is hosting the tender listing, and includes construction of a new 100/33 kV substation connected to the existing 110 kV Zadar–Istok Biograd transmission line.
- HEP has already obtained a location permit for the 54.8-hectare site, expects a construction permit by Q2 2027, and is targeting the ready-to-build stage by the end of 2026.
- Croatia's cumulative solar capacity passed 1.2 GW by the start of December 2025, and solar is forecast to surpass wind in installed capacity for the first time in 2026.
- The Croatian government recently unveiled a €40 million ($46.2 million) plan to fund household solar, battery, and heat pump installations as part of its tenth package of energy support measures.
Why it matters: HEP's project pairs 200 MWh of battery storage with 56 MW of solar — roughly 3.6 hours of full-output duration — making it one of Croatia's larger hybrid utility-scale builds. It advances a national solar fleet that crossed 1.2 GW in December 2025, on track to overtake wind in installed capacity this year.
