- Los Angeles Lakers are trading center Deandre Ayton to the Washington Wizards for guard Jaden Hardy and two second-round picks (2031 and 2032), per ESPN's Shams Charania.
- Lakers agreed to a sign-and-trade with Utah for Walker Kessler earlier this week and will now search for a backup big, with Andre Drummond, Jonas Valanciunas and Kevon Looney among candidates floated by sources.
- The second-rounders help replenish L.A.'s draft cupboard after the team gave up two future firsts and two pick swaps in the Kessler deal.
- Washington slots Ayton into a frontcourt that already features 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis and 2024 No. 2 pick Alex Sarr, who had surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot last month — making Ayton insurance during Sarr's recovery.
- Ayton started all 72 games for L.A. and averaged 12.5 points on 67.1% shooting with 8.0 rebounds; he excelled in the first-round win over Houston (11.8 pts, 10.8 rebounds, 1.0 blocks) but faded in the OKC sweep (7.3 pts on 45.2% shooting).
- Wizards can absorb Ayton into their $13.4 million Kelly Olynyk trade exception, which expires July 9, and would create a new $6 million exception in the process, per ESPN's Bobby Marks.
- Jaden Hardy, a former Luka Doncic teammate in Dallas, averaged 12.6 points on 44.3% shooting (42% from three) in 23 games after arriving in Washington; he has two years and $12 million left with a 2027-28 team option.
Why it matters: L.A. just spent two future firsts and two pick swaps on Walker Kessler, so getting two second-round picks (2031, 2032) and a 23-year-old guard back for Ayton partially offsets the cost of reshaping the frontcourt. Washington grabs a proven starter while top pick Alex Sarr heals from foot surgery — and does it inside a $13.4M trade exception that expires July 9.
