- Google's Gemini app now serves more than 900 million users per month across 230+ countries and 70+ languages, giving it a distribution scale and cost-subsidization advantage that dedicated AI companies under increasing financial pressure cannot easily match.
Why it matters: Google can deploy always-on agents across Gmail, Drive, Docs, Photos, and 30+ partner apps to 900 million monthly users while temporarily subsidizing costs — a scale-and-pricing moat that puts pressure on OpenAI and Anthropic to prove their agent strategies can compete. The Verge notes that if Google still can't make agents useful after this, the whole concept may need a rethink, raising the stakes for the entire industry.
