- Universal Talent Development launched its fourth Universal Composers Initiative cohort in partnership with Universal Film Music, with participation from DreamWorks Animation and Universal Studio Group Music.
- The 2026–'28 cohort names eight composers: Annah Tencic, Marcus Norris, Logan Nelson, Katya Richardson, Kristen Personius, Forrest Gray, Claudio Olachea, and Jeremy Earnest.
- Established in 2018, the two-year program recruits composers from both traditional and non-conventional professional backgrounds and grants participants the opportunity to pitch for NBCUniversal scoring projects.
- Mike Knonbloch, president of NBCUniversal Music and Publishing, Universal Film, described the program as an "accelerant to the trajectory" of working composers at the emerging level.
- Since the initiative's inception, 10 alumni have gone on to score NBCUniversal features across Universal Pictures, Focus Features, and DreamWorks Animation.
- Ninety percent of alumni have been hired on an NBCU-related project, spanning animated TV series, shorts, silent film restoration, documentaries, commercials, and theme park music.
- Brandon Williams, SVP of Universal Talent Development, framed the program as a way to "strengthen the creative pipeline that drives the future of our industry."
Why it matters: The 90% alumni hire rate across NBCUniversal's ecosystem — ranging from theatrical features to theme park music and silent film restoration — shows the studio is using this program as a working creative pipeline, not a publicity exercise. For the eight new composers, two years of structured access to executives, producers, and pitch opportunities is a structural career advantage over emerging composers without similar institutional backing.
