Hossler fires 61 for Wyndham lead, Theegala one back

- Beau Hossler signed for a 9-under 61 at Sedgefield Country Club to take a one-shot lead in the opening round of the 2026 Wyndham Championship, his fifth career first-round lead on the PGA Tour.
- Sahith Theegala opened with a 7-under 28 on his front nine — eight birdies and a bogey with just 10 putts — before cooling to a 62, putting him in a tie for second and extending a streak of 13 consecutive made cuts.
- Ben James, a 23-year-old PGA Tour rookie, reached 9 under with three holes to play but played his final three in level par to settle for a 62 alongside Theegala.
- Hossler entered the week ranked No. 122 in the FedEx Cup standings and is the lone player to move inside the top 70 after Round 1; a win would vault him approximately 70 spots to No. 52 and clinch his 2026 postseason berth.
- Hideki Matsuyama carded a 65 and has now played eight consecutive rounds in the 60s, while Brooks Koepka opened with a 67 and needs at least a solo fourth-place finish to reach the playoffs.
- DraftKings installed Hossler as the 8-1 favorite, followed by James (9-1), Theegala (10-1) and Matsuyama (14-1) ahead of the second round.
Why it matters: Hossler is the only player in the field who can secure a playoff spot solely by winning, and his projected 70-spot jump in the FedEx Cup standings would lock in playing privileges for years after he missed the postseason the previous two seasons. With Theegala and Matsuyama also firmly in the mix, the Wyndham effectively becomes a must-watch bubble event for the top 70 cutoff.
