Spanish households save €10 a month thanks to renewables expansion, report finds

- Wind and solar combined share of Spain's electricity generation rose from 33% in 2021 to 42% in 2025, while the country's power prices stayed "largely unaffected" by a 60% gas price spike
- Italy remains the European outlier with gas setting wholesale electricity prices 75% of the time — the highest in Europe — despite sharing the Iberian Peninsula's renewable resources
- Germany expanded wind and solar from 28% to 45% of power generation in the same period but saw more muted consumer benefits because renewables displaced coal and nuclear rather than gas
- Ember analyst Chris Rosslowe said a recent 60% gas price rise barely registered on Spanish electricity bills, which actually fell in April 2026 — a "clear and obvious contrast" to the 2021 crisis
- Dr. Diego García Gusano of Tecnalia warned that Spain's gas-fired plants still set prices during key hours, and that frequent very low prices from renewables are weakening the investment signal for further build-out, with slow storage deployment and limited demand flexibility compounding the problem
Why it matters: Spanish consumers pocket €10/month in savings while Italy, with 75% gas-coupled pricing, has not escaped fossil exposure. But the report's own experts warn the advantage is fragile: gas plants still set prices during peak hours, and ultra-cheap renewable hours are already deterring new investment. Storage and grid flexibility have not kept pace with generation.
