- Bitdeer signed a 16-year lease valued at up to $4.7 billion to provide 121 megawatts of AI/HPC capacity at its Tydal, Norway data center, with the facility configured for Nvidia GPU-based AI workloads.
- The tenant is a subsidiary of Volta Infra; Bloomberg reported that Volta's $10 billion cloud contract is with Anthropic, though Bitdeer did not disclose whether Volta is the end customer or an intermediary.
- JP Morgan and another unnamed global financial institution are expected to issue approximately $1.3 billion in letters of credit to secure the tenant's payment obligations under the lease.
- Bitdeer shares (BTDR) jumped about 8% in early Nasdaq trading following the announcement, reflecting investor approval of its AI infrastructure pivot.
- Bitdeer fully liquidated its roughly 943 BTC treasury in early February to fund expansion, diverging sharply from peers MARA Holdings (over 36,000 BTC), Riot Platforms, CleanSpark, and Hut 8, each holding at least 10,000 BTC.
Why it matters: Bitdeer is converting Norwegian power infrastructure originally built for Bitcoin mining into dedicated AI compute, with ~$1.3B in JP Morgan-backed letters of credit signaling institutional confidence in the tenant's ability to pay over 16 years. Its full liquidation of 943 BTC while peers like MARA hold 36,000+ shows Bitdeer is now betting its entire treasury strategy on AI rather than crypto appreciation.
