- Smart #2 debuted at the Paris Motor Show with a 35.8 kWh LFP battery, 290 km of WLTP range, and a €19,990 starting price in Germany, France, and Italy, with European orders opening tomorrow and deliveries in 2027.
- The #2 is built on Smart's new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) with a 60 kW rear motor producing 130 Nm of torque, and the company claims it has the first five-link rear suspension in the segment.
- Smart says the #2 charges from 10 to 80% in about 20 minutes on a DC fast charger; the base Pure trim is limited to a 7.4 kW single-phase onboard charger, while higher trims get 11 kW AC charging.
- The car is 2,746 mm long with a 6.95-meter curb-to-curb turning circle, more than double the range of the old EQ Fortwo, which never offered DC fast charging.
- Renault's Twingo E-Tech is the direct rival at the same €19,990 starting price but offers four seats, five doors, a smaller 27.5 kWh pack, 262 km of range, and 50 kW DC charging.
- The #2 will not come to the US or Canada, since Daimler exited those markets in 2019 and Chinese-built connected vehicles currently have no path into the US.
- Smart Europe CEO Wolfgang Ufer framed the launch as "the next chapter of the smart two-seater," while Electrek noted Volkswagen's ID. Every1 is targeted at roughly €20,000 in 2027, the same year #2 deliveries begin.
Why it matters: Smart is betting that a 2,746 mm footprint and €19,990 price can re-anchor a brand that, since Mercedes handed half to Geely in 2019, has sold only crossovers; whether urban buyers prioritize parking-friendly length over the Twingo's four-seat practicality will determine if a niche too small to sustain the old Fortwo can be revived against a €20,000 VW arriving in 2027.
