Fred Tsui Named HKIFFS Executive Director

- Fred Tsui has been appointed Executive Director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS), succeeding Albert Lee and reporting to chair Dr. Wilfred Wong and the board, effective Sept. 23.
- In the new role, Tsui will oversee the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) and HAF Film Lab, the Summer International Film Festival, and the HKIFF Cine Fan repertory strand.
- Tsui currently runs Moebius Entertainment as founder and CEO, where he built an international sales agency for Asian titles; the company recently boarded worldwide sales for Michelle Zhou's Venice Horizons selection "Big Little Things" and Fiona Roan Feng-i's Toronto-bound "Happily Ever After."
- Before launching Moebius, Tsui spent more than two decades at Media Asia Film, eventually running its international sales and co-production division as general manager and helping extend the Hong Kong studio's global reach.
- Earlier in his career Tsui held senior roles at PCCW and Asia Television, and he currently sits on the Hong Kong Film Development Council and belongs to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, with jury credits at festivals including Edinburgh, Jecheon, Tallinn, Seattle, Udine, Sitges, Sonoma and Skip City.
Why it matters: Wong's statement positions Tsui as uniquely qualified to lead HKIFFS, citing his 30+ years spanning sales, distribution, financing and festival juries as a bridge between Hong Kong cinema and the global marketplace. With HKIFFS running both a financing forum (HAF) and a year-round industry arm (HKIFF Industry), the organization now hands that pipeline to a sitting CEO whose sales shop is concurrently feeding Venice and Toronto — concentrating influence over Hong Kong's arthouse indie export circuit in one executive.
