- Marvel Studios announced seven actors for its untitled X-Men reboot at Disney's D23 fan event in the US on Friday, with Stranger Things star Sadie Sink cast as Jean Grey and Adam Driver revealed as the villainous Nathaniel Milbury, also known as Mr Sinister.
- Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, a character fans first saw appear in Spiderman: Brand New Day last month; speaking at D23, Sink said it was 'so wonderful' to 'finally talk about the character after months of speculation.'
- Adam Driver joined the announcement via video-link, telling fans he had been talking 'for years about maybe joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe' and that the new film was 'the perfect film at the perfect time.'
- The remaining cast announced for X-Men includes Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm.
- Jake Schreier will direct the untitled X-Men reboot, which is scheduled for theatrical release in May 2028.
- Patrick Stewart, who previously played Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, will reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday (out December) before Abbott takes over the character in the new X-Men film; a new Doomsday trailer at D23 showed Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom in a fight scene with Chris Hemsworth's Thor.
- Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, told D23 attendees there was 'a lot more X-Men casting news to come,' while the prior X-Men film Dark Phoenix was released in June 2019 under 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the franchise rights that year.
Why it matters: This is the first formal cast reveal for Marvel's X-Men reboot — nine years after Dark Phoenix under 20th Century Fox and roughly six years after Disney absorbed the franchise rights. The May 2028 release gives Marvel a long runway, and Feige's promise of more casting to come signals today's seven names are the foundation, not the full roster, for the MCU's centerpiece mutant team.
