- Lilian T. Mehrel's debut feature "Honeyjoon" won the Tribeca AT&T Untold Stories Award, premiered at Tribeca, and went on to 50+ festival screenings and multiple awards.
- Mehrel created the "Honeyjoon Movie Date" after audiences repeatedly lingered after screenings to talk with her and each other, describing what she called a "buzzy energy" and "sexy vibe."
- The first Movie Date at NYC's IFC Center sold out the theater's biggest room, with the singles afterparty at The Parkgate bar producing a waitlist out the door.
- The screening partnered with Met Through Friends and featured bingo-style question prompts inspired by the film, with pairs of "Honeyjoon" hats as prizes for matches.
- "Honeyjoon" is in theatrical release through Utopia's Circle Collective across NYC, LA, Chicago, Toronto, and additional cities.
- Mehrel framed the concept as a response to audience hunger for IRL connection, calling the movie date "retro, classic, real."
Why it matters: Mehrel is betting that for indie films with a passionate niche audience, the theatrical experience itself — not just the film — is the product. By packaging "Honeyjoon" screenings with post-film social events, she converts passive ticket buyers into an in-person community, and the IFC sellout plus afterparty waitlist signal that IRL-first, event-driven distribution can work for small films.
