- Lightdox acquired international sales rights to Nostalgia for the Future ahead of the documentary's three screenings at Film Fest Gent in Belgium on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday.
- Brecht Debackere wrote and directed the Belgium–Netherlands–Italy co-production, which world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and is narrated by Oscar-nominated actress Charlotte Rampling.
- The film profiles Chris Marker (1921–2012), the reclusive filmmaker behind La Jetée and Sans Soleil, via an unnamed archivist who moves through 550 boxes of his personal archive held by the Cinémathèque française.
- Rather than a conventional biography, Debackere structures the documentary around "the associative logic of his work," with the archive framed as "a living system of memory" and Marker's images treated as "time machines."
- Nostalgia for the Future was co-produced by Visualantics, SeriousFilm, Cobra Films, and Ghirigori, with Steven Dhoedt producing; cinematographers are Jerome De Gerlache, Alexi Van Hennecker, and Ben Grinand, with a score by Rutger Zuydervelt and Niels Borrey.
- Lightdox CEO Anna Berthollet said Debackere created "not simply a portrait of Marker, but a meditation on images, memory and the way we imagine the future," calling it the kind of bold, author-driven documentary the company looks for.
Why it matters: For documentary distributors and Marker scholars, the deal extends the international reach of the first major film to enter the 550-box Marker archive at the Cinémathèque française — a resource the filmmaker spent his life guarding. Marker, who once called himself "the best-known author of unknown films" and sent photos of his cats in place of portraits, left almost no conventional biographical trail, making this archive-driven approach a rare attempt to reconstruct him on his own terms.
