- Pete Hegseth served as the Trump administration's public frontman for waging war on Iran, leading weeks of kinetic operations aimed at decimating Tehran's nuclear threat.
- President Trump signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran to end the conflict, but the agreement was reached without securing significant concessions on Iran's missile or nuclear stockpiles.
- Hegseth has said little publicly since the MOU was signed, going quiet on the Iran file he once fronted, according to the source.
- Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff continue to lead the diplomatic track on Iran, negotiating the post-war settlement while the Defense Secretary remains silent.
- The MOU ended active combat operations but left intact the nuclear and missile capabilities the Pentagon publicly cited as justification for the war.
Why it matters: Hegseth's disappearance from the Iran file while Trump pivots to diplomacy suggests the war's loudest Pentagon advocate is being sidelined from the settlement phase. The MOU halted kinetic operations without forcing Iran to surrender the nuclear and missile stockpiles the administration said justified the war — leaving the Defense Secretary with little operational success to publicly defend and handing the diplomatic endgame entirely to the White House envoys.
