Sony Confirms R-Rated Animated Bloodborne Film

- Sony Pictures announced at CinemaCon it's developing an R-rated animated Bloodborne film, with Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch promising the adaptation will be "very true" to the gory spirit of FromSoftware's gothic horror game.
- PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and YouTube creator Seán McLoughlin (JackSepticEye) are co-producing the film; McLoughlin, who has 48 million online fans, is repped by CAA, Nicole Ambrose, Hansen Jacobson, and 42 West.
- Lyrical Media, parent of Lyrical Animation, is co-financing the Bloodborne film alongside Sony Pictures.
- Sony is aggressively expanding its video game adaptation slate, recently announcing a Helldivers film directed by Justin Lin and starring Jason Momoa, and completing principal photography on a Legend of Zelda adaptation directed by Wes Ball with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason as Link and Princess Zelda.
- Video game adaptations have become a major box office category in the post-COVID era, with A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie ranking among the highest-grossing films of that period.
Why it matters: Sony is scaling a PlayStation-to-screen pipeline that has already paid off with Minecraft Movie and Super Mario Bros. Movie-level returns. By locking in an R-rated tone and a co-producer credit for a 48-million-subscriber Bloodborne creator, Sony is signaling it wants gamer-credible adaptations rather than diluted, family-safe fare.
