- Google announced Tuesday that its Personal Intelligence feature for Gemini is now open to all US users, dropping the previous restriction to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.
- Free-tier access is available through three surfaces — AI Mode in Search, Gemini in Chrome, and the Gemini app — but is limited to personal Google accounts, excluding business, enterprise, and education users.
- Personal Intelligence pulls data from connected apps including YouTube, Google Photos, and Gmail to automatically tailor responses, such as shopping recommendations based on recent purchases or troubleshooting advice based on device info Gemini already holds.
- The feature remains opt-in, and users can disconnect any connected app at any time, per Google's Tuesday blog post.
- Google stated that Gemini and AI Mode do not train directly on users' Gmail inboxes or Google Photos libraries, limiting training to specific prompts and the model's responses.
- A reviewer who tested personalization earlier this year found Gemini could analyze interests and make 'pretty good guesses' but stumbled on the details — suggesting the product still has room to refine personalization quality.
Why it matters: By moving Personal Intelligence from a paid perk to the free tier, Google is betting that app-connected context is the differentiator that keeps casual users inside its AI ecosystem rather than migrating to ChatGPT or Claude — but the feature stays opt-in, and the firm explicitly disclaims training on Gmail or Photos data, signaling it knows the privacy stakes are the adoption ceiling.
