- Iran is expected to receive within weeks up to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defense missile launchers in a $60-70 million deal, one of Tehran's largest-known efforts to strengthen short-range air defenses since the war with the US and Israel erupted in late February.
- The deal was signed with Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, a Hong Kong-based intermediary, with deliveries planned by air from Urumqi in western China transiting through Pakistan to Iran; the sources did not clarify whether transfers would be by air or by road.
- China's Foreign Ministry denied the report as "completely groundless," saying Beijing has consistently worked to promote peace, while Pakistan's military called speculation of its involvement "absolutely concocted and false"; Iran's foreign ministry did not respond.
- Trump said last week that China and Russia pledged not to sell arms to Iran, warning that doing so "would be very bad for them" — a public claim now directly contradicted by the reported deal.
- The systems are QW-12 and FN-16 infrared-guided, shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles designed to engage low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and drones; their mobility allows small teams to deploy and relocate them rapidly around military and energy infrastructure.
- Iran has also explored overland routes for Chinese military supplies and dual-use components to reduce disruption risk, and was previously reported to be close to a separate Chinese deal for anti-ship cruise missiles.
- The US suspended two weeks of bombardment shortly before publication, but Trump warned strikes would resume if negotiations fail to end the five-month-old conflict, which has theoretically been in a ceasefire since April.
Why it matters: The $60-70 million shipment of 400 shoulder-fired missile systems directly contradicts Trump's public assertion that Beijing pledged not to arm Tehran, while the mobile, MANPADS-style systems could meaningfully fill the gap in Iran's air defenses that Israel exploited early in the war to operate freely over western Iran.
