Beaver dams boost drought resilience in England

- Beavers were hunted to extinction in Britain around 400 years ago; they were reintroduced to the wild in the River Otter, Devon, in 2015, with four more pairs released to the Par and Fowey rivers in Cornwall this February.
- Puttock said modern landscapes are extensively drained, and beavers reverse that by creating "complex wetlands" through dams and canals that slowly release water into rivers.
- Puttock noted that beaver wetlands also serve as firebreaks, citing U.S. research built on the premise that "water doesn't burn," making landscapes resilient to both drought and wildfire extremes.
- Puttock cautioned that one beaver wetland "won't solve all of our drought problems" but said combining beaver expansion with other nature-based wetland schemes would make landscapes "less prone to droughts."
Why it matters: With over half of England officially in drought, Puttock's research gives water authorities and policymakers a nature-based lever: each beaver wetland pond stores roughly 1,000 cubic metres and cuts peak flows by 30%, offering a low-cost complement to engineered flood and fire defences as the country expands reintroduction sites beyond Devon into Cornwall.
