Argentina’s solar train brings zero-emission travel to an ancient trade route

- Tren Solar de la Quebrada carried 90,000 passengers over two years along a 42 km restored railway through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Quebrada de Humahuaca in Jujuy province, a canyon used as a trade and migration corridor for more than 10,000 years (UNESCO recognition came in 2003).
- The train runs on a 352 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with regenerative braking, ferrying up to 388 passengers (72 seated) on the ~52 mile round trip on a single charge — and never burning any fuel.
- Each of the six stations on the route is equipped with EV-style chargers fed by a dedicated 6 MW solar farm backed by stationary battery storage, meaning the entire system operates without combustion.
- About one in three of the 90,000 riders — roughly 30,000 passengers — accessed the train through its social responsibility program designed to bring the experience to the local community.
- Phase 1 of the route currently links Volcán and Tilcara, with the project's long-term vision extending service north to Humahuaca and ultimately La Quiaca near the Bolivian border, though no expansion timeline has been published.
- The Quebrada de Humahuaca corridor links Andean highland communities with the lowlands and has been in continuous use since prehistoric times, giving the solar train a heritage route unlike most new transit projects.
