Hussam Abu Safiya, former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been detained by Israeli forces since December 2024 — 18 months without charges — as Israel investigates suspicion of Hamas ties that staff and international aid groups deny.
Nasser Odeh, Abu Safiya's lawyer, said his client appeared extremely weak and struggled to sit upright during a July 2 visit, with recent head injuries around his eyes, ears, and neck and difficulty breathing; Odeh and Physicians for Human Rights Israel have petitioned for his transfer.
Abu Safiya led Kamal Adwan Hospital through an 85-day Israeli military siege before his arrest, releasing videos pleading for help that made him the face of health workers struggling through the war.
Odeh told Israel's Supreme Court last month that Abu Safiya faced physical and psychological abuse and extended solitary confinement; Abu Safiya appeared by video looking pale and gaunt with lash-like marks on both arms.
Israel's Prison Service rejected the allegations as "false and entirely without factual basis," saying all detainees are held in accordance with the law and receive medical care per Ministry of Health guidelines.
Human rights organizations and the United Nations have alleged systematic patterns of abuse against Palestinian detainees since the war began, with the number of Palestinians in Israeli detention surging after October 2023; the war has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians per Gaza's Health Ministry.

Why it matters: Abu Safiya's case crystallizes a documented pattern flagged by the UN and human rights groups of abuse in Israeli detention of Palestinians since October 2023 — he was a globally visible hospital director held 18 months without charge while suffering documented head injuries, yet Israeli authorities deny all abuse allegations without addressing the specifics his lawyer raised.
