- Met Office upgraded the Storm Boelo wind warning to amber for the whole mainland and the Western Isles, running 21:00 Saturday to 21:00 Sunday, while Orkney stays on yellow — a warning forecasters called unusual because of how long and how widely it lasts.
- Storm Boelo is forecast to bring widespread westerly gusts of 60-70mph, reaching 80mph on exposed coasts, starting with western Scotland and the far north of Northern Ireland on Saturday evening before spreading eastwards overnight and through Sunday.
- SEPA issued amber flood alerts across much of the mainland after forecasters warned of 60-80mm of rain on Friday, even though no official flood warnings were in place and BBC readers sent in photographs of flooded roads in Crossgatehall, East Lothian.
- Network Rail Scotland will shut rail lines at the height of the storm: services south and west of Kilwinning stop from 21:00 Saturday, the Oban and Mallaig lines close around 22:00, and the Kyle of Lochalsh–Achnashellach and Wick–Helmsdale lines close from the start of Sunday's service.
- Transport Scotland said road, rail, air and ferry services were all likely to be affected, with longer journey times, cancellations and possible restrictions on bridges and exposed routes, as the Scottish Government's resilience room met to coordinate preparations.
- Police Scotland deputy head of road policing Supt Andy Barclay urged drivers to consider whether journeys were "really necessary", warning that stopping distances can be at least double on wet roads and that HGV and bus drivers may be asked to park.
- Penicuik Athletic's Scottish Cup tie with Clyde was postponed on Friday because of heavy rain, and a Halloween family fun day at Dean Park Castle and Country Park in Kilmarnock was postponed for Sunday because of the weather warning.
Why it matters: For rail passengers, the 21:00 Saturday cutoff for services south and west of Kilwinning and the 22:00 closure of the Oban and Mallaig lines is the concrete change, with reduced speeds on main lines and Sunday closures on Kyle of Lochalsh and Wick–Helmsdale. With Transport Scotland flagging cancellations and bridge restrictions, weekend travel plans need rework.
