- Met Office upgraded its Storm Boelo wind warning from yellow to amber for the whole Scottish mainland and the Western Isles, in force from 21:00 Saturday to 21:00 Sunday, with Orkney remaining on yellow; forecasters said the combination was unusual because of the warning's length and geographical spread.
- Storm Boelo is forecast to bring widespread 60-70mph westerly gusts on Saturday, reaching 80mph in exposed coastal areas, with the strongest winds hitting western Scotland and the far north of Northern Ireland Saturday evening before spreading eastwards overnight and through Sunday alongside periods of heavy rain and frequent showers.
- Network Rail Scotland set out scheduled closures: services south and west of Kilwinning stopping from 21:00 Saturday, the Oban and Mallaig lines closing from about 22:00, and the Kyle of Lochalsh–Achnashellach and Wick–Helmsdale lines shut from the start of service on Sunday, with reduced speeds across large parts of Scotland.
- Transport Scotland said road, rail, air and ferry services were all likely to be affected, with longer journey times, cancellations and possible restrictions on bridges and exposed routes, and the Scottish government's resilience room met to prepare for severe weather.
- Sepa issued amber flood alerts across much of the mainland ahead of Friday's forecast 60-80mm of rain from Storm Austen, though no official flood warnings were in place; BBC readers sent in photos of flooded roads in Crossgatehall, East Lothian on Friday afternoon.
- Andy Barclay, deputy head of road policing for Police Scotland, said stopping distances can be at least double on wet roads, told HGV and bus drivers they could be asked to park at a suitable position by police, and urged drivers to consider whether journeys were "really necessary" over the weekend.
- Penicuik Athletic's Scottish Cup tie with Clyde was postponed because of heavy rain, the Halloween family fun day at Dean Park Castle and Country Park in Kilmarnock was postponed due to the weather warning, and Renfrewshire Council said Paisley's Halloween festival would go ahead on Friday with an update on Saturday's events to follow.
Why it matters: For weekend travellers, the 21:00 Saturday start of the amber window brings a concrete timetable of closures — services south and west of Kilwinning stopping, Oban and Mallaig shutting around 22:00, and Kyle of Lochalsh–Achnashellach and Wick–Helmsdale closed from Sunday's first service — with reduced speeds elsewhere and stopping distances at least doubling on wet roads.
