Oviraptors Hatched Eggs Less Efficiently Than Birds

- Researchers in Taiwan built a life-sized oviraptor incubator — a polystyrene-foam and wood trunk with cotton, bubble paper, and cloth soft tissue — and used casting-resin eggs arranged in double rings to model heat transfer in a real clutch.
- The reconstructed species, Heyuannia huangi, lived 70–66 million years ago in what is now China, measured ~1.5 meters long, weighed ~20 kg, and built semi-open nests of several egg rings.
- In cold conditions with an attending adult, outer-ring egg temperatures differed by up to 6°C, a gap that could cause asynchronous hatching; in warmer conditions the difference shrank to 0.6°C as solar heat supplemented the brooding adult.
- Oviraptors failed all three prerequisites of modern birds' thermoregulatory contact incubation — full egg contact, dominant heat role, and a constrained temperature range — because their egg rings kept the adult from touching every egg.
- Dr. Tzu-Ruei Yang of Taiwan's National Museum of Natural Science led the study, published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution (DOI: 10.3389/fevo.2026.1351288), with first author Chun-Yu Su, who was a student at Washington High School in Taichung when the work was done.
- The team proposed oviraptors and the sun acted as co-incubators, a strategy less efficient than modern birds' brooding but possibly a behavioral bridge in the evolution from buried to semi-open nests.
Why it matters: By constructing a physical surrogate dinosaur and simulating heat transfer, the team gives paleontologists a new physics-based method for questions previously out of reach and reframes the dinosaur-to-bird transition: oviraptors weren't worse hatchers, they used a different, environment-dependent strategy whose lower measured efficiency (large outer-ring temperature swings of up to 6°C) likely reflects co-incubation with solar heat rather than biological inferiority.
