- Young Thug admitted spending $50,000 on stream‑boosting for Gunna’s DS4Ever album to secure a #1 Billboard debut.
- DS4Ever opened at #1 on the Billboard 200 with over 150,000 album‑equivalent units, beating The Weeknd’s Dawn FM by 2,300 units.
- Luminate verified the album’s streaming numbers and reported no suspicious activity at the time.
- Beatdapp estimates fraudulent streams divert roughly $2 billion in royalties each year.
- Spotify says it removes artificial streams, withholds royalties, and imposes penalties, investing heavily in automated and manual detection.
- Apple Music claims less than 1 % of its streams are manipulated, using real‑time monitoring and analytics.
- Michael Smith was charged with wire‑fraud conspiracy for using bots and AI to generate more than $10 million in illegal streaming revenue.
Why it matters: Honest artists lose billions in royalties to bot‑generated plays, while streaming platforms face scrutiny and legal risk; the $2 billion fraud siphons revenue from creators and forces services like Spotify and Apple Music to invest heavily in detection and penalties across the market.
