Wildfire Hits NASA's Spain Deep Space Antenna

- The Deep Space Network (DSN) consists of three enormous antenna stations — one in California, one in Spain, one in Australia — each covering roughly a third of the sky, so losing Spain creates geometric gaps that will leave some spacecraft out of contact at times they otherwise wouldn't be, according to Washington University researcher Paul Byrne.
- NASA has temporarily shifted mission operations to the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California, calling the transition "seamless" — but the agency acknowledged this is a "temporary bandage," and Byrne told the outlet simply, "This isn't great."
- The DSN is already drastically oversubscribed, slowing the delivery of commands and data from spacecraft, and the problem is set to intensify as the Artemis lunar programme ramps up demand on the network.
Why it matters: With one of only three DSN stations potentially compromised, NASA loses roughly a third of its deep-space antenna coverage at the worst possible time — the network is already oversubscribed, and the Artemis lunar programme is about to pile on more demand, raising the risk that data from the most distant missions, including Voyager 1 and 2, never makes it back to Earth.
