Wildfire Hits NASA's Spain Deep Space Network

- NASA stated antenna damage at the facility has not been assessed yet, with evaluation pending until it is safe to do so
- The Deep Space Network is already drastically oversubscribed, and losing one of its three global stations worsens capacity constraints as the Artemis lunar programme ramps up demand
- Paul Byrne at Washington University in Missouri explained that the three DSN stations' geometry means certain spacecraft — especially distant ones like Voyager 1 and 2 — will now be out of touch during parts of the day when they otherwise wouldn't have been
- NASA has temporarily shifted mission operations to the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California to maintain continuity of service, though Byrne noted "This isn't great"
Why it matters: NASA's Deep Space Network relies on three globally distributed stations so that two can always track a spacecraft at any moment; losing the Spanish complex doesn't merely reduce bandwidth but creates scheduled blackout windows in the sky, with the Voyager probes — humanity's most distant active spacecraft — most exposed to the geometry gap until the Spanish dishes are restored.
